Along with attracting a lot of sunlight, Dave Warner’s south-facing garden gets very warm in the summer. Dave was looking for a stylish structure that provides some shade for his family and dogs.
“I had already sourced a pavilion made out of Western Red Cedar, so the next step was to find cedar decking to match. I searched online and found Silva Timber”, explains Dave.Along with a range of Western Red Cedar decking options, Dave liked the look of Silva Timber’s Western Red Cedar Shingles, which would match the pavilion and the decking. “I visited the Widnes branch. Keith showed me around, he was very helpful. I had a good look at the cedar decking and shingles and I really liked the way they looked.”
Silva Timber supplied Dave with Western Red Cedardeck 40x140mm Decking and Certigrade No.1 Grade (Blue Label) Western Red Cedar Shingles. He installed the structure, deck and shingles himself. “I have done some joinery in the past. I think it’s pretty easy as long as you do your research and take the correct measurements”.
Dave’s recommendation to DIY enthusiasts:
“I would urge others to do their research. Read about coverage and how to install the timber and shingles. Buy the correct fasteners and measure everything up before you start working with it to avoid disappointment.“
Dave finished the pavilion and deck with a coat of Owatrol Textrol - Penetrating Oil Finish. He was overall very happy with the results and products. “I found Western Red Cedar very easy to work with. It smells lovely and on a rainy day, the red tones of the cedar are highlighted!”
It is interesting to observe (below) how Dave used offcuts from the Western Red Cedar decking to create a facia for the front and sides of the deck. Rather than buying an extra full board to use for a facia, this is an economical way of using trimmings to finish your deck.
