Case Study - Orkney Cladding Project

Project Summary

Silva Timber's Western Red Cedar bevel cladding fits the bill for this three bedroomed detached house in the remote Orkney Islands.

Orkney House

The Requirements

Ambitious self-builder, Erik Tait wanted to create an eco-paradise within the stunning natural beauty of the Mainland of Orkney.

Located on the northern tip of Scotland, where the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet, the property would be subjected to a combination of salty, harsh and wet conditions during the winter and hot days in the summer. The exterior materials selected for the house would need to weather well and also fit with Erik's environmental theme. Good insulation was a prerequisite

The build's location in Kirkwall on the Mainland, surrounded by listed buildings and rich in architectural heritage, would require a sympathetic approach in order to blend with its surroundings.

Any external materials chosen would also need to complement Erik's choice of Canadian Slate tiles for the roof.

Result

The warm tones and textured finish of the Western Red Cedar cladding provides a perfect complement to the Canadian Slate roof tiles. The oily quality of the Western Red Cedar ensures protection against the elements and its natural durability will give peace of mind for years to come.

The low density and high proportion of air spaces means that Western Red Cedar cladding is a great thermal insulator, helping to keep the house cool in the summer and reduce heating costs in the winter.

Erik will be supplying us with regular updates on the progress of his house so we'll be updating this case study with some pictures of the finished build.

Customer Testimonial

Erik comments "I originally planned to source a local supplier for the cladding, as I thought that delivery could be an issue, due to our remote location. However, I came across Silva Timber during my initial research and called their Cheshire warehouse for some advice and a quote. I felt that the price was very competitive for the premium quality cladding which I had chosen and the team were extremely helpful in recommending the quantity and working with me to arrange delivery. I have since placed further orders with Silva Timber and the level of customer service has been consistently excellent throughout the project. Building your own house can be a stressful experience but the team at Silva has been both helpful and supportive during the process. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to other Self Builders out there".
