About Wickham's wood grading

Every tree is unique, like a fingerprint, and every piece is assigned a grade corresponding to its natural characteristics. This system is unequalled with respect to proving wood's authenticity. Consider using Rustic or Natural graded boards in areas which are not as visible within the application, using the best Select & Better graded boards in more prominent areas.

The Solid Collection - Nature at your feet

Give your home a distinctive look with the Solid collection, providing broad, country syle boards with plenty of natural features such as knots and grain variations for a floor full of charm and character. Solid collection boards are tongue & grooved all round for a secure and clean fit.

All boards in the Solid Collection are exclusively finished with Oxylust+ as standard. Wickham's exclusive Oxylust+ aluminium oxide finish offers superior wear resistance in addition to limiting bacteria and mould proliferation through use of an antimicrobial agent, Ultra-fresh. The Solid Collection is also covered by a 35 year guarantee on structure and finish for residential applications.

The close grain of Maple timber gives it a soft, even texture. Often used for gymnasium floors, furniture and cabinetry, Maple is equally proficient for interior flooring, offering a bright, attractive surface which helps accentuate the light of a room, making it feel airy, expansive and welcoming.

With a Janka scale hardness rating of 1450, Maple is one of the hardest wood flooring surfaces available.

While the Maple grain is generally straight, it can also appear curly, wavy, or striped, providing natural character and interesting boards to admire.

Maple is exceptionally strong and shock resistant with a fine, uniform texture.

Maple Species

A characteristic tree of broadleaf forests in the Maritime Province and in the southern parts of Ontario and Quebec. Frequently planted as a shade tree and for its spectacular autumn colour.

Leaves: 8-20cm long, somewhat wider; 5 (occasionally 3) lobes with long blunt-pointed tips and a few irregular wavy teeth. Central lob almost square, separated from lateral lobes by wide rounded notches. Upper surface deep yellowish-green, pale and hairless beneath. Yellow to brilliant orange and bright red in autumn. Stalk 4-8cm long.

Buds: Terminal bud narrowly cone-shaped. 6-12mm long, sharp=pointed, medium to dark brown, with 6-8 pairs of fainlty hairy scales

Twigs: Shiny reddish brown to green, hairless

Fruits:  Small, with 5 greenish-yellow sepals but no petals, in drooping tassel like lateral clusters (sometimes terminal) on slender stalks 30-70mm long. Most flowers have both stamens and pistils, but usually only one of the organs is functional. Both kinds of flowers on the same tree and often in the same cluster, where they tend to develop at different rates. Fully formed before the leaves appear.

Bark: Smooth, grey; becoming dark grey, divding into long, vertical, firm irregular ridges that usually curl outward along one side, occasionally somewhat scaly.

Wood: Moderately heavy, hard and strong; light brown. Rays scarcely visible on tangential face.

Size & form: Medium-sized trees, up to 25m high, 60cm in diameter and 100 years old. In the forest, trunk usually branch-free for half its length; crown short, narrow. In the open, trunk divides near the ground into a few ascending limbs that bear widely diverging and ascending branches. Crown rather long, dense. Root system shallow, wide-spreading.

Habitat: Often occurs in swamps and other moist soils, but thrives in a great variety of soils and sites. Moderately shade-tolerant.
