Western Red Cedar’s natural characteristics provide a wonderful material for finishing with solid colour stains. Its outstanding dimensional stability, fine texture and freedom from pitch and resin all combine for an exceptional ability to accept and retain many different types of finish.
By installing factory finished Western Red Cedar 19 x 137mm Tongue & Groove cladding, you will be taking the best steps possible to ensure unbeatable quality and excellent performance.
The tongue & groove profile is our most popular style of cladding, owing to it's ease of installation and the subtle shadow line provided by the v-joint created between the two adjoining boards.
Silva’s primed Western Red Cedar ticks all the boxes:
- 50 year warranty on material
- FSC® Certified
- Lightweight, easy to work with and ready for coating
- Save on time and costs
What is Primed Western Red Cedar cladding?
Primed cladding is supplied with one coat of factory applied grey primer ready to be either factory finished or hand painted on site with a solid colour. Silva Timber offer primed Western Red Cedar cladding in stock for immediate delivery, making it an economical choice for customers who are able to finish the boards manually on site using a solid colour stain or wish to send it to their own finishing house.
Our primed cladding is made from sections of FSC Certified Clear Vertical Grain, kiln dried Western Red Cedar that are reassembled to offer the performance of premium Western Red Cedar cladding.
Relatively new to the UK market, finger jointed Western Red Cedar has been used successfully in North America for many years offering a cost effective timber cladding product readily accepted by builders, architects and homeowners.
Making efficient use of valuable wood fibre, finger jointed Western Red Cedar reconstitutes short high-grade lengths into long, straight, defect free lengths of cladding & trim. Advanced technology exterior weather-resistant glue is used to bond the short lengths together to endure exposed conditions. Once machined into profiles, face sanded and factory primed and finished, the precision fitted joints are virtually invisible and are actually stronger than the surrounding wood fibre.

The Benefits of Kin Dried Cladding and Trim
Coverage
1m2 = 7.87 metres of board
Exposed profile face
127mm
Moisture Content
Kiln dried to 12-15% moisture content
Finish coating
Sikkens Rubbol WF finish is vacuum coated on all prefinished cladding boards.
- Provides the timber with weather resistance
- Specially formulated for application via vacuum coating
- Excellent adhesion to timber
- Helps regulate the moisture content in timber
Every board is coated on all sides in the vacuum coating process in controlled factory conditions. A combination of heat, vacuum pressure and feed speed ensures consistent coverage and finish quality. The boards are then dried in a heat chamber, and the whole process is repeated 3 times to provide the required finish (primer and two top coats).

Installation
Western Red Cedar cladding up to 140mm should be fixed with one nail per bearer. For cladding over 140mm fix with two nails per bearer. Tongue & Groove and Microline Channel profiles can be blind nailed; all other profiles should be face nailed.
Fasteners
For best results use stainless steel annular ring shank nails. These have thin shanks and blunt points to reduce splitting. Nails should be driven with care into the framing members. Hand nailing is recommended as heavy nailing by pneumatic nail guns can cause wood distortion and splitting.
Batten Spacing
Western Red Cedar Cladding performs best when installed proper on a suitable frame. Cedar cladding should be securely nailed to battens, framing members, or to blocking between framing members. A 600mm spacing between battens is recommended. For more detailed installation information view the Cladding Installation Guide below.

Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.
For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.

This product carries Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Accreditation
FSC is a world-wide, independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation representing environmental and social groups and the timber and forestry industry. It aims to generate certification of forestry activity that incorporates clear guidelines and standards covering social, environmental and economic aspects of forest management.
Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is widely regarded as one of the most important initiatives of the last decade to promote responsible forest management worldwide
The FSC label provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value.
Chain of Custody (CoC)
The FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification system provides an audit trail from forest to final use. The rigour of the system is ensured by regular independent inspection at all stages in the supply chain.
