Western Red Cedar Tongue & Groove V - Joint cladding is produced from the very best fine grained, coastal grown Western Red Cedar. It is kiln dried to 12 - 15% moisture content which means that it can be installed and finished immediately without the need for acclimatisation on site.

This consistently high quality 'A & Better Clear' grade Western Red Cedar is as free from natural flaws as it is possible to get, with only very occasional tiny grown-in knots and very minor imperfections permitted (if any are present at all).

Our Tongue & Groove V - Joint has been planed and sanded on one face leaving a smooth finish that is free of all natural and manufacturing defects.  This benefit of this is that there will be minimal, if any preparation required before applying a finish as there is no planer skip or raised grain to deal with.  Boards are reversible with the other face having a fine sawn finish which adds an appealing texture to the finished project.

Moisture Content

Installation

Western Red Cedar cladding up to 140mm should be fixed with one nail per bearer. For cladding over 140mm fix with two nails per bearer. Tongue & Groove and Microline Channel profiles can be blind nailed; all other profiles should be face nailed.

Finish coatings

It is recommended that finish is applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. The type of coating will be determined by the final finish and look selected. Click here for our range of recommended finishes. Alternatively, Silva Timber offer prefinished cladding in either solid colour or translucent stains.  The finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation. It helps prevents staining caused by mildew and extractives and will increase the service life of timber.

Fasteners

For best results use stainless steel annular ring shank nails. These have thin shanks and blunt points to reduce splitting. Nails should be driven with care into the framing members. Hand nailing is recommended as heavy nailing by pneumatic nail guns can cause wood distortion and splitting.

Batten Spacing

Western Red Cedar Cladding performs best when installed proper on a suitable frame. Cedar cladding should be securely nailed to battens, framing members, or to blocking between framing members. A 600mm spacing between battens is recommended. For more detailed installation information view the Cladding Installation Guide below.

Western Red Cedar Cladding

Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.

For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.

This product carries Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Accreditation

FSC is a world-wide, independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation representing environmental and social groups and the timber and forestry industry. It aims to generate certification of forestry activity that incorporates clear guidelines and standards covering social, environmental and economic aspects of forest management.

Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is widely regarded as one of the most important initiatives of the last decade to promote responsible forest management worldwide

The FSC label provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value.

Chain of Custody (CoC)

The FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification system provides an audit trail from forest to final use. The rigour of the system is ensured by regular independent inspection at all stages in the supply chain.

FSC chain of custody (CoC) tracks FSC certified material through the production process - from the forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing and distribution.

Only FSC CoC certified operations are allowed to label products with the FSC trademarks. The FSC label thus provides the link between responsible production and consumption and thereby enables the consumer to make socially and environmentally responsible purchasing decisions.

Silva Timber Products meets the requirements for FSC Chain of Custody Standard FSC - STD - 40 - 004 (2004) within the BM TRADA Certification Limited Scheme for TRADA - Trak chain of custody certification
