Cumaru is a beautiful hardwood with a rich palette of golden tans to medium reddish brown colours and fine interlocking grain. Compared to other wood species Cumaru ranks very highly in density, strength and hardness which combined with its stability and durability creates a resilient and reliable decking material.
Cumaru is a lower cost alternative to Ipe as the two species are similar in their appearance and technical properties.
Appearance: Cumaru is a particularly attractive wood species with colour tones ranging from golden honey to dark reddish brown and the predominant colour being a medium reddish brown. The colour tones perfectly complement each other and overall create a warm rich appearance. Cumaru has an irregular interlocking grain and a course texture.
Durability: Cumaru is rated in the most durable hardwood category of all species world-wide. If properly installed and maintained, a deck built with Cumaru should have a minimum life expectancy of 25 years and could even exceed 50 years.
Density: Cumaru has one of the highest density ratings of any wood species making it ideally suited to commercial decks, particularly in high traffic areas. A rating of 1080kg / m3 demonstrates Cumaru’s density credentials above almost all other species.
Stability: Cumaru has good stability characteristics once dry. To ensure that shrinkage and checking are kept to an absolute minimum, Cumaru decking from Silva is kiln dried to a moisture content of 14 – 16%.
Strength: Cumaru is one of the strongest wood species available with an MOR rating of 24,800.
Hardness: With a rating of 3200lbs, Cumaru ranks very highly on the Janka Scale making it one of the most impact and scratch resistant species available.
Grading: First quality is the highest grade of Cumaru decking that is commercially available. It is 100% heartwood and graded for one face to be relatively defect-free. Occasional pin holes, small sound tight knots, light planer miss and other non-structural defects and characteristics are allowed on the reverse and sides of the board.
