If you are building a fence or an elevated deck and you want it to stand the test of time then you can’t go far wrong with these treated Southern Yellow Pine posts.

Southern Yellow Pine is an extremely dense and strong wood species, making it ideal for structural applications.   It has a unique cellular structure that allows deep uniform penetration of wood preservatives, so there is no need to treat the exposed ends of sawn timber.

Pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine has a similar appearance to other pressure treated softwood products commonly available at UK timber merchants and DIY stores, so these posts would work well with other treated fence / deck components.

These posts are structural rather than appearance graded so there are small knots, checks, wane and other visual defects present, however these will not detract from their performance and longevity.

Our Southern Yellow Pine posts are treated for ‘in-ground’ use to last a minimum of 25 years!  The manufacturer even offers a lifetime warranty, which is exceptional for a fence / deck post.

We are currently clearing excess stock to make way for spring shipments arriving soon.  There are a limited number of packs containing 12 posts each.  We have a few loose ones too so if you need to add a few extra you can do so at the same discounted unit price.

Our 140 x 140mm posts are produced from 'No. 2 Select Construction' grade Southern Yellow Pine. This grade is recommended for most general construction uses where moderately high design values are required. Allows well-spaced knots of any quality.

These posts are treated for 'in- ground' use and will last a minimum of 25 years. This is an incredible life expectancy for a fence post and is due to the fact that Southern Yellow Pine reacts exceptionally well to being pressure treated. The unique cellular structure of this species permits deep, uniform penetration of wood preservatives, unlike many other timbers that only allow limited penetration of the preservative. This makes treating the exposed ends of sawn timber unnecessary and gives the timber a long service life.

140 x 140mm Southern Yellow Pine balusters are planed all round with eased edges.

Why Use Southern Yellow Pine?

Southern Yellow Pine grows in a vast band across the Southern United States, from East Texas to Virginia. With a warm, natural look it blends beautifully with any landscape and offers one of the best defences against decay.

It has a proven track record of more than 75 years, and being one of the hardest and strongest pines in the world makes it an excellent choice for outdoor projects.

Aesthetically pleasing

Southern Yellow Pine decking provides a warm, natural look that blends beautifully with the landscape. It is an aesthetically beautiful timber with an attractive honey colour and a distinctive grain pattern.

Decay Resistant

Southern Yellow Pine reacts exceptionally well to being pressure treated. The unique cellular structure of Southern Yellow Pine permits deep, uniform penetration of wood preservatives, unlike many other timbers that only allow limited penetration of the preservative. This makes treating the exposed ends of sawn timber unnecessary and gives the timber a long service life, even in the British climate.

Sustainable

Sustainable forestry practices ensure that the supply of Southern Yellow Pine will be maintained for future generations. Trees cover about a third of the entire United States and are more plentiful now than they were 75 years ago. In addition, over four million trees are planted every day in America and more are grown each year than are harvested or lost to disease, insects and fire.

The forests of the south are often called "America's Woodbasket." Here are just a few of the many reasons why:

  • 214 million acres of the United States' forestland is in the south.
  • The south produces 15.8% of the world's timber production, and 58% of the timber production in the United States.
  • By volume, the most abundant southern softwood species is Southern Yellow Pine making up one-third of the total inventory.
  • Annually, softwood harvests total 6 billion cubic feet or 420 million tons of sawlogs, pulpwood, and other industrial roundwood products.
  • Each year, southern landowners plant one billion seedlings. Following annual harvests, 3.3 million acres are reforested.
  • 89% of southern forests are privately owned; 11% are managed by government agencies.

Durable

Southern Yellow Pine's high density means that it offers excellent wear resistance making it ideal for decks with high foot traffic.

Strong

Southern Yellow Pine is the strongest structural softwood species for engineered and framing applications.

Versatile

A wide range of sizes of Southern Yellow Pine are available from stock. The design possibilities are endless but a few project ideas to get you started include decks, railing, fences, pergolas, benches and planters. Southern Yellow Pine decks are easy to install requiring only basic tools and skills.
