A stair stringer is an inclined member that supports a stairway's treads. A stair stringer may be solid with treads attached to cleats mounted on the inside face, or pre-cut, with treads resting on the top of the cut-outs. Our notched stair stringers are pre-cut for convenience from pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine.
Southern Yellow Pine is an ideal material for stair stringers as it is dense, strong, and the pressure treatment penetrates right through the board making it extremely durable.
Note that the load supporting requirements for stair treads are more severe than for the rest of the deck because the force exerted by a person walking down stairs is more intense blow to the surface than a standard stride across a level surface.
The maximum span for a stair stringer is 400mm therefore you will need to install a minimum of four stringers on any stairway wider than 900mm.
It is the best policy to overbuild your stairs because of the increased wear and tear they often receive.
