Western Red Cedar Battens

19 x 38mm Western Red Cedar Battens are a versatile product suitable for a range of purposes. Often used for framing fences, trellis and acting as trim to hide fixings, battens have also recently become highly desirable for creating slatted screens and horizontal fencing.

Silva's Battens are made from C & Better Clear Grade Western Red Cedar, offering a light & durable board to work with. Stability is also key when working with timber. To maintain the crisp, clean lines that are essential to the overall look of your project it is important to choose a material that does not warp or twist. Being one of the most stable wood species on the planet, Western Red Cedar fits the bill perfectly.

Silva Timber's Western Red Cedar makes perfect sense:

• Highly durable and long lasting
• Exceptional stability means Cedar boards remain flat and straight
• Clear grade Western Red Cedar offers unrivalled beauty
• Being light in weight, Cedar is easy to cut and handle on site, reducing build time
• Beautiful tones and grain patterns
• A proven performer in all types of climate, so its a natural product you can rely upon

19 x 38mm Western Red Cedar Battens are surface planed on 1 side and 2 edges. This product allows either the smooth surfaced or rough sawn face to be exposed. The surfacing process provides uniform width and thickness tolerances.

Western Red Cedar Battens from Silva Timber are often left unfinished to naturally weather to a stunning silver-grey colour. Alternatively, a solid colour or translucent natural toned finish can be applied. The application of a finish will help prevent staining caused by mildew and extractives and will increase the service life of the timber.

The Benefits of Kiln Dried Cladding and Trim

Moisture Content

Kiln dried to 12-15% moisture content

Finish coatings

It is recommended that finish is applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. The type of coating will be determined by the final finish and look selected. Click here for our range of recommended finishes. Alternatively, Silva Timber offer prefinished cladding in either solid colour or translucent stains.  The finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation. It helps prevents staining caused by mildew and extractives and will increase the service life of timber.

Fasteners

For best results use stainless steel annular ring shank nails. These have thin shanks and blunt points to reduce splitting. Nails should be driven with care into the framing members. Hand nailing is recommended as heavy nailing by pneumatic nail guns can cause wood distortion and splitting.

Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicliy managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.

For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.
