Description

Accoya® is wood, but not as you know it. It is timber modified by a process called acetylation, a cutting-edge patented technology, which enables it to resist rot, defy the elements and stay strong for decades.

Profile

Accoya® cladding is available in two contemporary profiles; Fineline Channel with its subtle channel groove, and Chamfered Channel, which, as the name suggests, features a chamfered edge. Each profile is available in a 145mm width and a range of lengths up to 4.8m.

Outstanding performance

Extensive laboratory and field testing by leading institutes around the world (including in New Zealand, USA, UK, Sweden, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Netherlands and Japan) has shown the performance of acetylated wood to be extremely reliable.

Accoya® treated wood has been thoroughly tested for dimensional stability, durability, paint retention and in-ground conditions to ensure optimal performance. Indeed, it is so reliable that for many years it has been – and continues to be – used by scientists as the benchmark against which other treatments and modified timbers are measured.

Dimensional stability

Dimensional stability can be defined as the degree to which a material maintains its original dimensions when subjected to environmental changes. Accoya® wood offers outstanding dimensional stability in both radial and tangential directions (thickness and width) meaning that it has minimal swell and shrinkage and may be confidently used in applications where it will encounter varying moisture conditions – even in freshwater immersion.

In the case of wood, swelling in damp or wet conditions and shrinkage in dry, hot conditions can have unwelcome implications: wood may warp or split, leading to insect degradation and more frequent maintenance cycles. Accoya® wood’s superior dimensional stability matches or exceeds all the best species in the world, including Teak, Sapele, Iroko and Western Red Cedar.

Tests have shown a reduction in swelling caused by moisture uptake of 75% or more. From oven dry to water saturated conditions, the swelling and shrinkage of acetylated wood is only minimal and, in fact, better than tropical hardwoods.

Accoya® wood has been tested over prolonged periods in all types of weathering conditions – above ground, below ground and in freshwater – and has been proven to withstand even the toughest and most challenging of environments.

Outstanding durability

Whilst some wood species are naturally durable, natural durability is known to be a variable and inconsistent property. Accoya® wood, on the other hand, is consistently durable. The properties of every batch are analysed by standard scientific measurements after modification, enabling its durability to at least match and even exceed the performance of nature’s most durable species, including teak.

Accoya® wood’s durability makes it very long lasting, at least 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground/freshwater. Manufactured from fast growing, sustainably forested radiata pine, its Class 1 durability (for Use Classes 1-4 in accordance with EN 350-1 & EN 335-1) means Accoya® is virtually rot proof, forming an effective barrier to insect attack. Rot causes wood to degrade – particularly when it is used outdoors and exposed to moisture – limiting its service life.

Thanks to the acetylation technology pioneered by Accsys Technologies, Accoya® long life wood offers an environmentally compatible, durable wood that can be used with confidence in outdoor applications and will last for many, many years.

Perfect for Factory Coating

Accoya® wood’s superior coatings performance is primarily due to its outstanding dimensional stability. With shrinkage and swelling reduced by 70-80%, the resultant more stable surface allows coatings to adhere better and last up to two times longer.

Naturally Insulating

Accoya® offers improved insulation in comparison with commonly used hardwood and softwood species and is ideal for applications where energy conservation is important.

Excellent machinability & ease of fixing

Accoya® wood is easy to machine and process manually, and can be fixed in the same way as other commonly used softwood species. As with most durable woods, Accoya® contains a small amount of acid. It is therefore strongly recommended that corrosion resistant fixings, such as high quality stainless steel, are used.

Quality & Ease of Use

Wood is a natural material and each piece is unique. This is partly what makes it so aesthetically pleasing and yet it can be a source of frustration and uncertainty when looking for guaranteed performance quality.

With Accoya® wood however, you can be sure of its consistent quality, durability and dimensional stability. Wood acetylation is a process that has been studied by scientists around the world for more than eighty years. The Accoya® wood production process combines this work with years of proprietary research and investment to deliver consistent results on a commercial scale.

Because Accoya® wood is modified all the way through, rather than just at the surface, when it is cut, planed or jointed there are no exposed unprotected surfaces in any dimension. This completely removes the need to apply additional chemical preservatives as is necessary with unmodified or envelope treated woods.

During the manufacturing process the hardness of the wood is increased yet the natural beauty of Accoya® remains, with colour tones comparable to the original source species.

Sustainability

By significantly enhancing the durability and dimensional stability of fast-growing and abundantly available certified wood species, Accoya® wood provides compelling environmental advantages over slow-growing hardwoods, woods treated with toxic chemicals and non-renewable carbon intensive materials such as plastics, metals and concrete.

The responsible procurement of wood plays a fundamental role in positioning Accoya® as an environmentally compatible product. All Accoya® wood is produced from well managed sustainable sources including FSC®, PEFC™ and other regionally certified woods.

Only abundantly available, fast growing source species such as Radiata pine are used to create Accoya®. The use of wood species that produce larger volumes of wood over the same time span for the same area of land offers obvious environmental advantages.

The Accoya® wood manufacturing process is non-toxic and adds nothing to the wood that does not already naturally occur in it.

The enhanced durability of Accoya® wood facilitates a lifespan of at least 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground, improving carbon sequestration potential and lowering lifetime material consumption versus other materials.

Accoya® wood’s outstanding dimensional stability and improved hardness results in lower maintenance frequency and therefore less coating use and waste over the product’s lifetime.

Compared to other durable wood species, Accoya® wood offers superior thermal insulation, which provides energy conservation advantages when used in applications such as cladding and windows.

Accoya® wood is fully reusable and recyclable. Reuse is recommended but Accoya® may be safely incinerated for bio-energy.

Environment

Wood from well managed sources is a natural, renewable solution for global environmental problems such as climate change, ecosystem destruction and landscape deterioration caused by increasing consumption. Besides forming a natural ecological habitat, forests are actually an important carbon sink by filtering CO2 out of the air and absorbing this in the biomass of the tree.

In the case of responsible management, it is actually advised to harvest as much wood as sustainable for production of durable products such as furniture or construction products, which act as additional carbon stores while providing the forest the opportunity to regenerate and produce new biomass (acting as new carbon sink).

However, supplies of certified slow growing tropical hardwoods suitable for outdoor use are limited, resulting in illegal logging which, in turn, leads to the deforestation of tropical rainforests. While in the tropical regions deforestation is still continuing, in temperate regions such as in Europe and North America the net forest area has been increasing steadily for several decades.

To produce Accoya®, only abundantly available wood species are being used from certified, sustainably managed forests and plantations, including FSC® and other regionally certified woods. Therefore all Accoya® is compliant with the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) as well as the Lacey Act, and therefore responsible production is guaranteed.

Fast growing softwood species such as Radiata Pine are primarily used to produce Accoya®. Considering the increasing pressure on available resources, the use of wood species that produce larger volumes of wood over the same time span for the same area of land offers obvious environmental advantages.
