Case Study - KKE Architects use Western Red Cedar Shingles to reduce clinical feel of Healthcare Facility

Silva Timber supplied a large quantity of Western Red Cedar Shingles to St David's Hospice Care in Newport, Gwent - the UK’s largest provider of hospice at home care (over 2600 patients cared for every year). The Hospice's services were previously managed from an outdated Victorian converted house, and a new building was required.

Healthcare specialists KKE Architects were chosen to design this building. “The hospice brief for patient care was to add a new day hospice and outpatients services to the existing home care. The building needed to incorporate all the necessities of a healthcare facility without emitting a clinical feel. We wanted the building to welcome patients, staff and visitors and sit naturally within its surroundings”, explains Jorge Eguiguren, Project Architect at KKE Architects. Silva Timber has a long standing relationship with KKE Architects and had the perfect natural cladding material to meet the requirements.

The cladding materials chosen for the building were slate and Silva Timber’s Certigrade No.1 Grade (Blue Label) Western Red Cedar Shingles.

“The cedar shingles were used on the exterior front elevation, which acts as a protective layer in contrast with the prefabricated concrete columns and glass. As the design was for a healthcare facility, we needed the materials to add an element of warmth to the building. The shingles provide a natural looking finish, which coincide with the beautiful Welsh landscapes and trees that surround the building itself. Furthermore, they make a good foil to the slate that was used at the front to reference the material Wales is well known for."

About Certigrade No.1 Grade (Blue Label) Western Red Cedar Shingles

KKE Architects have used cedar shingles on Healthcare projects in the past with great results, most recently at Douglas Macmillan Hospice and a Healing garden for WellChild. Along with being extremely durable and attractive, Western Red Cedar shingles are the ultimate eco-friendly cladding and roofing product:

  • The only renewable cladding and roofing resource
  • Lowest pollution of any cladding and roofing product
  • Lowest energy used of any cladding and roofing product
  • Outstanding insulation properties

Jorge Eguiguren explains further, “We have used them on this particular project because we were working towards a low carbon design and Western Red Cedar Shingles are sustainable, trap carbon emission through carbon capture and have a very low embodied energy as they are produced using a relatively simple process.”

Silva Timber hold large stocks of shingles in warehouses in Cheshire and West London, ready for quick dispatch nationwide. For more information about specifying cedar shingles for your project, visit Silva Specify (BIM, Installation, Grading etc) or contact us directly.
