Case Study - Teesside Western Red Cedar Shingle Treehouse

When Mick Johnson of Johnsons Landscapes, Teesside, was tasked by his clients to revive a dilapidated tree-house into a safe play area with some character, Silva Timber were happy to provide Western Red Cedar Shingles to finish the project to perfection.

Mick’s client had inherited the treehouse from the previous home owner which was clad with thin plywood and conifer to create the feel of a ‘jungle den’. The den however had seen better days and was unsafe for children, to the extent the area had become a ‘no-go’ area for the client’s young family.

Following some discussions between the client and Mick, shingles were discussed as a possible option and after some online research Mick decided to use Western Red Cedar Blue Label Grade 1 Shingles from Silva Timber.

Mick commented, “Silva’s website was extremely informative in a practical sense but also very appealing in the project examples it displayed. Although very experienced in garden timber work, this would be my first venture into Western Red Cedar shingles and I was quickly convinced you could create something very beautiful using this product.”

The original treehouse was stripped to it’s bare bones, with Mick enlarging the deck and installing a secure staircase. Balustrading was replaced all round with safe spacing, with plywood used for under-coursing underneath the shingles.

The Western Red Cedar shingles became a labour of love for Mick. Having researched shingle installation Mick took time to apply the shingles correctly including weaving corners.

During the installation Mick was greeted with amazing feedback from the client. “They could see the tree house from the main house above the shrubberies and as the sun hit it they said the colours were fantastic.”

Western Red Cedar shingles provide a beautiful product for roofing, with a rich, warm colour palette and excellent natural characteristics providing durability and resistance from the elements.

Mick added, “Western Red Cedar shingles really is a wonderful product to work with. I’ve worked as a landscape gardener for several years and decided to set up Johnson's Landscapes earlier this year. This project was one of the most pleasing I have ever undertaken and I can’t wait for the next Western Red Cedar Shingle construction.”
