Case Study - Garden feels like home with Western Red Cedar and Ipe Hardwood Decking

The owners of a home in Winchmore Hill, North London were undertaking a major refurbishment of their garden, following a new modern extension to their house.

Garden designer Miles Raybould, from Belsize Gardens, was entrusted with the task of creating a modern family garden that was both elegant and stylish, complementing the design of their house renovation. The garden was required to tie together an existing garden studio with the brand new extension.

Miles Raybould:

“The clients both work in the studio so the garden had to work all year round. My inspiration therefore came from tying in the studio building with the new extension. This was achieved through a strong architectural design that incorporates Western Red Cedar Trellis, Western Red Cedar Battens, Ipé Hardwood Decking, rendered raised beds and oak sleeper borders.

The use of soft planting and living walls helps to soften the architectural lines and create a lush, vibrant garden that I am very proud of. I think it connects wonderfully with its surroundings.”

The client:

“We always liked the idea of linking the house through to the studio with the garden space outside, and now the garden has become part of the house. Miles completely understood what we were looking for in a garden from start to completion.”

Western Red Cedar Battens were used to clad the extension of the property as well as to create a Slatted Screen Fence around the garden boundaries, including a living wall. The darker hues of Ipé Hardwood Decking compliment the vibrant range of colours of Western Red Cedar.

The client:

“We like the contemporary feel and the bright, fresh colours of the cedar fencing. The spaces between the battens add natural light, without detracting from the privacy we desire. The Ipé Hardwood Decking (seen below) is stylish but when having kids, it has to also be able to take a few knocks – and it has done just that.”

Miles Raybould has used Western Red Cedar from Silva Timber for various projects around London. He recently contributed to our Product Focus about the increasingly popular Half-Height Slatted Screens.

Miles Raybould:

Western Red Cedar is a wonderful material to work with. It is soft enough that it is very easy to work with and it never warps. For me, the real beauty is in the colour – the mixture of oranges, browns and pinks. While it can fade to a beautiful silver over time, I have found that finishing it will enhance those colours for a long time. Not to mention the cedar smell is sensational!”
