Garden buildings are a great way to add a multifunctional space that’s perfect for entertaining and enjoying the garden all year round.
Nick from Barris Roofing put his trade skills to the test and built a garden building using his own plans with the help of Planning Portal to keep within permitted developments.
The new building was designed to be a place for socialising with friends whilst keeping an eye on the kids and to accommodate a home gym. Western Red Cedar was chosen for the cladding mainly for its aesthetics but also for its durability. Due to its natural dimensional stability, Western Red Cedar copes well in moisture rich environments, which means the timber is much less likely to twist or warp, ideal for the wet British weather.

As Western Red Cedar is so lightweight it makes the perfect material for DIY projects, especially when cutting boards to size and moving them into place.
The timber was very easy to work with and this particular project didn’t require any extraordinary carpentry skills. I used the installation guide on the website to brush up on the task ahead, and it all went as smoothly as I could have hoped.
Nick chose to finish the cladding with Sansin Wood Sealer rather than a coloured stain to retain the natural colour variations, whilst providing additional protection to the timber. Wood Sealer protects the wood from moisture whilst allowing it to weather to a consistent silver grey.
The building has created a very nice feature in our garden. It blends well with the surroundings, but also stands out just enough to give a wow factor. Up close this building looks high quality and the Western Red Cedar is to thank for that.
