Description

Cascadia Bevel Profile

Cascadia Western Red Cedar Bevel cladding will give your façade a unique depth and texture. This profile is tapered across the width, with the thicker butt end overlapping the course below to create bold shadow line effects. Intended to be used with the fine sawn face exposed, this rebated bevel cladding will accept and retain coatings significantly better than on the planed face, thus improving appearance and minimising future maintenance.

At a glance

  • Select Tight Knot grade, will not fall out over time
  • Rebated bevel profile creates even spacing
  • Rustic, characterful appearance
  • Highest grade of Knotty Western Red Cedar Cladding

Rustic and characterful, with an attractive shadowing appearance

Bevel or Featheredge is a popular cladding type. It is produced by re-sawing boards at an angle to produce two pieces thicker on one edge than on the other. Bevel cladding is installed horizontally and gives an attractive shadow line effect. The rebate allows for simple installation, ensures even spacing and reduces installation time.

Finishing & Protection

It is recommended that a finish is applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. The type of coating will be determined by the final finish and appearance desired.

Why Pre-finish?

  • Enhances the natural beauty of wood
  • Ensures a consistent finish
  • Applied in factory conditions
  • Long lasting protection against weathering
  • Simple maintenance routine
  • Reduces onsite labour costs

Sansin Enviro Stains

Easy to apply and maintain, Sansin Enviro-stains deliver outstanding performance. Sansin's range of wood protection products are available in 80 colour tones

What is weathering?

There is a risk involved when leaving wood exposed to the elements. During the weathering process wood can appear unsightly as the material can blacken due to moisture getting into the fibres and pulling out tannins and extractives. Finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation.

When compared to other cladding & trim materials, Western Red Cedar makes perfect sense.

As a plentiful, renewable resource, Western Red Cedar offers a sustainable solution combining longevity, unrivalled natural attributes and a beautiful appearance.

Highly durable, naturally resistant to decay, dimensionally stable, light in weight and easy to work with, Western Red Cedar is a truly wonderful material and has long been the choice for discerning architects, builders and homeowners.

Beautiful appearance

  • Natural beauty and warmth that cannot be replicated by cement fibre, plastic, metal or composite products
  • A pleasing range of natural hues, tight grain patterns and soft textures

Natural durability

  • Naturally occurring compounds called Thujaplicins and water-soluble phenolics act as preservatives
  • Finished and maintained, Cedar will deliver decade of trouble free service

Dimensional stability

  • Low shrinkage factor
  • Resistant to warping, twisting and checking
  • The most stable softwood species commercially available

Thermal conductivity

  • Low density and high proportion of air spaces make Western Red Cedar the best thermal insulator among common softwood species
  • Superior performance when compared to brick, cement fibre or metal.

Moisture Content

Kiln dried to 12-15% moisture content

Installation

Western Red Cedar cladding up to 140mm should be fixed with one nail per bearer. For cladding over 140mm fix with two nails per bearer.

Finish coatings

It is recommended that finish is applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. The type of coating will be determined by the final finish and look selected. Click here for our range of recommended finishes. Alternatively, Silva Timber offer prefinished cladding in either solid colour or translucent stains.  The finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation. It helps prevents staining caused by mildew and extractives and will increase the service life of timber.

Fasteners

For best results use stainless steel annular ring shank nails. These have thin shanks and blunt points to reduce splitting. Nails should be driven with care into the framing members. Hand nailing is recommended as heavy nailing by pneumatic nail guns can cause wood distortion and splitting.

Batten Spacing

Western Red Cedar Cladding performs best when installed proper on a suitable frame. Cedar cladding should be securely nailed to battens, framing members, or to blocking between framing members. A 600mm spacing between battens is recommended. For more detailed installation information view the Cladding Installation Guide below.

Grading

Select Tight Knot Grade

Select Tight Knot is the highest standard of knotty cladding and trim available. This grade offers a distinctive, high quality knotty appearance.  It has limited imperfections and restricts knots to sound and tight.

The grade is characterised by knots, grain patterns and other natural features combined with a palette of warm, mellow tones ranging from light amber to deep honey brown.  Sound tight knots are live knots that are grown into the wood and are less likely to fall out than dead knots.

Silva sources its select tight knot grade Western Red Cedar boards from one of North America’s leading primary sawmills, with a reputation throughout the industry for producing superior quality Western Red Cedar products.

The raw material is carefully selected to ensure consistency in quality and performance.  By starting with a reliable and consistent fibre supply, Silva is able to offer knotty grade Western Red Cedar boards that meet exacting standards from order to order.

Silva Select Tight Knot boards are graded on all sides to ensure knots are sound and tight. It is supplied kiln dried which ensures consistent material which can be installed without the need for acclimatisation on site and can be prefinished without delay.

The STK grade allows burls and naturally occurring markings which are of fairly uniform distribution and add to the character of the product.  Sound, live, small to medium tight knots (approximately the size of a 10p piece) are permitted every 150 - 200mm.

Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.

For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.
