Case Study - Blue Label Royal Western Red Cedar Shingles complete new garage building
When Mike Page from Garden Woodcraft was tasked with building a new garage for his client, Western Red Cedar No.1 Grade Blue Label Royal Shingles were the perfect choice for his roofing material.
The client had already designed the structure to his specifications, so it was left to Mike to translate the plans into the finished building. Having used various grades of Silva's Western Red Cedar shingles in the past, Mike was aware of the benefits of using shingles for roofing.
Western Red Cedar roof shingles, shakes and hip & ridge roof tiles have been used for hundreds of years and have proven their durability in all kinds of climates. They can be used to create individual buildings, whether traditional or modern, and their rich, warm colour and texture blend beautifully in any natural environment. The natural effects of aging and weathering give shingles, in time, an attractive silvery grey colour.
Royal shingles have particular appeal due to their uniform length, 610mm, compared to Five-X Blue Label Shingles of 405mm. This means installers can allow for a much larger exposure of 146mm over a regular pitch roof, providing an attractive, long-length appearance.
Being the highest quality No.1 Grade Blue Label, Royal shingles are made of 100% heartwood, 100% clear and 100% edge grain with no defects.
Mike commented; "The uniform length and thickness made sorting and application really easy and the lack of knots meant trimming and splitting to size was accomplished mostly with a sharp stanley knife."
Western Red Cedar is renowned for its insulation qualities, dimensional stability and natural resistance to the elements, making it ideal as a natural roofing solution. It contains a natural preservative which makes the wood extremely durable in its natural state.
On using the Royal shingles, Mike mentioned; "For ease of use alone, Royal shingles were worth the extra cost."
