Board-and-batten is a vertical design created using wide cedar boards spaced apart with narrower boards (battens) covering the joins. There are no set board or batten widths - various combinations are used to create different looks suitable for large or small scale applications.

  • Square edged board
  • Versatile - used for a wide range of applications
  • Rustic, characterful appearance

Suitable for a wide variety of applications

Aside from board-and-batten cladding, boards are primarily used on buildings for board on board cladding, vertical boarding, soffits, fascia and barge boards.  They can also be used for fencing, screens and other landscaping applications.

These kiln dried boards are manufactures to a high standard by one of North America's most reputable primary manufacturers of Western Red Cedar products.

Silva's Western Red Cedar Boards are produced from consistently high quality wood fibre. They are kiln dried at source and have a distinctive appearance characterised by well interspersed small sound tight knots.

The boards have a fine sawn face and a smooth planed face and edges. Boards are graded on the sawn face however virtually all boards in any shipment will be suitable for installation with either face exposed.

The following board widths are available from stock (all 19mm in thickness): 89mm, 140mm, 184mm, 235mm and 286mm. While there are no set widths for board and batten cladding, a popular combination is 19 x 89mm battens and 19 x 235mm boards. This can also be reversed with boards installed over battens to create a deep channel effect.

Board-and-Batten is a cladding style created by using vertical boards and battens of various widths for a wide range of appearances. Boards up to 140mm wide should be spaced 13mm apart, battens should overlap by a least 13mm. When using wider boards increase the batten overlap proportionately.

Cladding should be nailed to horizontal blocking lines or to battens. Boards up to 150mm wide should be fixed with one nail per bearing driven through the center of the board. The overlying batten covering the gap between boards should be attached with one nail per bearing, the shank passing between the edges of the under boards. Use two nails per bearing on boards 150mm and wider placing the nails 65mm to 75mm apart.

About Silva’s ‘Select Tight Knot’ Grade Boards

Silva’s Western Red Cedar boards are produced from consistently high quality wood fibre and kiln dried at source to a moisture content of xx – xx. Among its many benefits the kiln drying process enables the boards to have a finish applied immediately and to be installed with minimal acclimatisation on site.

Boards have a fine sawn face and are planed smooth on the rear and two edges. They are graded on the sawn face, however most boards are suitable for installation with either the sawn or smooth face exposed.

Select Tight Knot grade is characterised by well interspersed small sound tight knots and other natural features. Sound tight knots (live knots) are a result of branches that were live on the tree when it was felled. They are grown into the wood surface and will not fall out unlike dead knots which can become loose and fall out.

The colours are a palette of warm, mellow tones ranging from light amber to deep honey brown.

Silva sources its Western Red Cedar boards from one of North America’s leading primary sawmills, with a reputation throughout the industry for producing superior quality Western Red Cedar products.

The raw material is carefully selected to ensure a consistency in quality that enables the production of an aesthetically superior board that will perform well over time.

Silva’s Western Red Cedar boards will meet exacting standards from order to order.

Western Red Cedar – beautiful, durable and sustainable

Western Red Cedar offers unique natural performance characteristics and exceptional beauty that bring warmth, character and longevity to the interior and exterior of residential and commercial projects.

The combination of durability and dimensional stability is Western Red Cedar’s greatest advantage over other species, making it particularly well suited for exterior applications where it is primarily used for cladding, decking, fencing and roofing.

Western Red Cedar is a truly sustainable building material.  It has the lowest environmental impact when compared with other building materials such as brick and fibre cement.  Independently certified, it is harvested legally and sustainably from managed forests in British Columbia.

Finishing & Protection

It is recommended that a finish is applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. The type of coating will be determined by the final finish and appearance desired.

Why Pre-finish?

  • Enhances the natural beauty of wood
  • Ensures a consistent finish
  • Applied in factory conditions
  • Long lasting protection against weathering
  • Simple maintenance routine
  • Reduces onsite labour costs

Sansin Enviro Stains

Easy to apply and maintain, Sansin Enviro-stains deliver outstanding performance. Sansin's range of wood protection products are available in 80 colour tones

What is weathering?

There is a risk involved when leaving wood exposed to the elements. During the weathering process wood can appear unsightly as the material can blacken due to moisture getting into the fibres and pulling out tannins and extractives. Finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation.

What to expect from timber products

When working with timber it should be expected that although ‘on-grade’, occasional boards may have minor imperfections that will require ‘working’ if you wish to eliminate. Examples include raised grain, small splits, minor handling marks, sticker marks etc – all of which can easily be remedied by trimming, gluing or sanding. In most cases imperfections can be removed with very little effort, and the small amount of off cuts generated as a result will be absorbed in the normal cutting and selection allowance.

Western Red Cedar boards are available in kiln dried ‘select tight knot’ grade.  Boards are planed on one face and two edges and sawn on one face.  Silva recommends installing board-and-batten cladding with the sawn face exposed.

The grade is characterised by knots, grain patterns and other natural features combined with a palette of warm, mellow tones ranging from light amber to deep honey brown.  Sound tight knots are live knots that are grown into the wood and are less likely to fall out than dead knots.

Silva sources its select tight knot grade Western Red Cedar boards from one of North America’s leading primary sawmills, with a reputation throughout the industry for producing superior quality Western Red Cedar products.

The raw material is carefully selected to ensure consistency in quality and performance.  By starting with a reliable and consistent fibre supply, Silva is able to offer knotty grade Western Red Cedar boards that meet exacting standards from order to order.

Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.

For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.
