Description

19 x 38mm Western Red Cedar Trim Boards are a versatile product suitable for a range of purposes. Often used for cladding, framing fences, trellis and acting as trim to hide fixings, trim boards have also recently become highly desirable for creating slatted screens and horizontal fencing.

Silva's trim boards are made from C & Better Clear Grade Western Red Cedar, offering a light & durable board to work with. Stability is also key when working with timber. To maintain the crisp, clean lines that are essential to the overall look of your project it is important to choose a material that does not warp or twist. Being one of the most stable wood species on the planet, Western Red Cedar fits the bill perfectly.

Raw Material

Silva Timber's Western Red Cedar is renowned for its high quality and consistency. Long term relationships with our suppliers and a deep knowledge of the cedar industry give us the advantage of having a continuous supply of the very best raw material.

Our size and buying power have enabled us to be in the privileged position of sourcing raw material direct from British Columbia’s largest and most respected primary producers of Western Red Cedar.

Silva Select cladding is made exclusively from premium coastal grown Western Red Cedar. Trees grown in the coastal region of British Columbia produce timber that is generally richer in colour and tighter grained than that produced from Western Red Cedar trees grown further inland. With its distinctive aroma and luxurious appearance, Silva’s Western Red Cedar stands apart from the rest, providing unrivalled beauty and maximum dimensional stability – it is known as Silva Select.

To guarantee quality and consistency the raw material is graded three times at source then further selection is done at Silva. It is first graded in the sawmill, then sized and graded once again before it undergoes the kiln drying process. Once kiln dried it is graded a third time to ensure accurate sizing and grading. As the raw material is moulded into cladding profiles at Silva, it is again checked and re-graded to ensure it meets our own in-house standards.

Silva’s grades exceed R-List Grading Rules which sets us apart from our competitors. Don't accept compromise; insist on Silva Select Western Red Cedar.

This product is available exclusively in the UK through Silva. It is sustainably sourced from well-managed forests and supplied with full PEFC chain of custody certification.

Finishing & Protection

It is recommended that a finish is applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. The type of coating will be determined by the final finish and appearance desired.

Why Pre-finish?

  • Enhances the natural beauty of wood
  • Ensures a consistent finish
  • Applied in factory conditions
  • Long lasting protection against weathering
  • Simple maintenance routine
  • Reduces onsite labour costs

Sansin Enviro Stains

Easy to apply and maintain, Sansin Enviro-stains deliver outstanding performance. Sansin's range of wood protection products are available in 80 colour tones

What is weathering?

There is a risk involved when leaving wood exposed to the elements. During the weathering process wood can appear unsightly as the material can blacken due to moisture getting into the fibres and pulling out tannins and extractives. Finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation.

More Information

Fasteners

For best results use stainless steel annular ring shank nails. These have thin shanks and blunt points to reduce splitting. Nails should be driven with care into the framing members. Hand nailing is recommended as heavy nailing by pneumatic nail guns can cause wood distortion and splitting.

What to expect when working with timber

When working with timber it should be expected that although ‘on-grade’, occasional boards may have minor imperfections that will require ‘working’ if you wish to eliminate. Examples include raised grain, small splits, minor handling marks, sticker marks etc – all of which can easily be remedied by trimming, gluing or sanding. In most cases imperfections can be removed with very little effort, and the small amount of off cuts generated as a result will be absorbed in the normal cutting and selection allowance.

Environment

Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.

For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.
