Young Designer vying for RHS Show Awards chooses Western Red Cedar
Here at Silva Timber, we're always delighted when innovative designers specify Western Red Cedar. In Owen Morgan's case, we were particularly pleased to hear the project was for RHS Show Tatton Park, with Owen in contention for various awards, including the prestigious Young Designer accolade.
Owen discovered his love for gardening 8 years ago, and was immediately hooked and has relished learning more about design and construction since.
Owen’s chosen design is a practical garden intended to be easily set up in any urban environment. The perfect antidote to city life, the garden will incorporate plants suited to higher pollution levels such lush, green ferns and grasses, Western Red Cedar and betula utilis ‘Jacquemontil’ and will also feature a sculptural green wall, maximising planting space.
The species chosen demonstrate a good tolerance of higher pollution levels making them ideal for an urban site. With its ability to be placed in any garden or space, as it is not reliant on natural soil, The Green Room provides a translatable and real solution for urban areas.
Owen commented, "I chose to use Western Red Cedar as I wanted a natural material that would give me a crisp finish and clean lines. Silva Timber's Western Red Cedar Cladding allowed me to have a strongly structured garden but with a softened natural edge. I was particularly drawn to Silva Timber's products because I wanted a sustainable product that gives a high end finish."
The grading quality of Western Red Cedar A & Better Clear from Silva Timber is as free from natural flaws as it is possible to get, with only very occasional tiny grown-in knots and very minor imperfections permitted (if any are present at all). Being kiln-dried, the timber is ideal for urban environments as it requires no acclimatisation on site prior to installation.
Western Red Cedar also offers a sustainable option, as the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicliy managed forests of British Columbia, Canada, with less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.
For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.
