Fraké Noir Boards

From £8.89 £7.41 per linear metre

Fraké Noir is the brand name for a thermally modified hardwood called Limba. A natural heat treatment process that uses only heat and steam (no chemical additives) significantly improves this non-durable timber species' performance.

Thermally modified Fraké Noir meets Durability Class 1, designating it 'very durable' with a service life of 25+ years according to NEN-EN 350-2. The thermal modification process also makes the wood extremely stable and gives it a characteristic walnut/chocolate brown colour, with a warm, luxurious appearance.

This superior thermally modified hardwood is ideally suited for exterior cladding applications. It combines an attractive knot-free appearance with excellent performance attributes at a competitive price point.

Fraké boards are used for open jointed cladding, fascia, barge boards, door and window reveals, corner trim, fences, horizontal slatted screens, and many more applications.

There is a £450 (ex VAT) minimum basket value applicable to all orders containing cladding, decking, and fencing products. Read the full details.

Key Properties

  • Colour: A rich walnut/chocolate brown colour consistent throughout the section of the piece.
  • Durability: Fraké Noir has a decay resistance of durability class 1 (very durable) according to the EN 113 standard. A service life of 25+ years can be achieved, or 60+ years if a surface coating is applied at the outset and maintained periodically.
  • Stability: The lower equilibrium moisture content and the changes in the chemical composition of the wood during the heat treatment process make Fraké Noir less able to absorb and release water, thereby improving dimensional stability. Tangential shrinkage ≤ 2%.
  • Density: The density of Fraké Noir is 540kg/m³.
  • Thermal properties: The thermo-modification process greatly improves the insulation value.
  • Grading: Fraké Noir is generally well presented. The material is mostly free of defects on the face, with some small crumbly knots on the reverse. It has a uniform colour with some black mineral staining/streaks if inspected at close quarters. Fraké Noir exhibits pinhole on some material, though this is not sufficient to detract from the overall appearance. The presence of variable grain gives some movement along the length, which is typical of any hardwood species.
  • Sourcing/certification: Limba is a so-called lesser-known timber species (LKTS) from Central Africa. FSC is promoting the use of LKTS from FSC certified forests to make forestry more sustainable in the long term. There is an abundant supply of raw material with Limba not listed in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species).

Limba used in Fraké Noir's production is sourced from FSC 100% origin with a reduced impact on logging areas, thereby giving the forest an enduring economic value to ensure it remains preserved and valued as a resource for local employment opportunities. One tree per hectare is logged on a 25-year cycle.

Fraké Noir from Silva Timber is supplied with full FSC chain-of-custody certification.

Optional Extras

Coatings: The application of a coating is necessary to protect the wood and optimise its appearance over time. The coating should be applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. Choose from our wide range of high-performance wood coating systems.

Factory coating service: Fraké Noir Tongue & Groove V-Joint can be supplied factory coated. Having the coating pre-applied on all sides enables it to be installed at any time of year, regardless of the weather or temperature. Please Contact Us for a quotation.
