Garapa Decking and Cedar Screens Create a Modern Family Garden

Gardens are a place to express our individual styles just as much as interior design, whether you love gardening or prefer a low maintenance, modern garden it’s clear that we’re paying more attention to garden design than ever before.

After recently moving into a new home, a couple with a young family hired Paul Richards Garden Design to continue the work they were doing on the house through to the garden, to create an outdoor space suitable for their family.

A new decking area was designed to match the level of the kitchen where new bi-fold doors would be installed to create a seamless transition from home to garden.

Paul’s clients liked the idea of having a number of different areas where the children had space to play whilst the adults had their own place to sit back and relax. With this in mind the characteristics of the timber for the deck played a big part in the overall aesthetic of the design, as the decking would cover such a large area.

The clients chose Garapa as they liked it’s knot free appearance and its hard-wearing nature

FSC certified Garapa has one of the most consistent colour tones and is perfect for high traffic areas. The cleanness of the Garapa perfectly complements the crisp, grey render of the raised planters giving a modern feel to the garden.

Paul’s clients had originally requested to use Western Red Cedar slatted screens to fence the whole garden after seeing them used in one of Paul’s show gardens. However, the budget didn’t stretch to this so Paul had to deliver the same look whilst staying within budget.

The answer to this was to use a low cost fence for the whole garden and space slatted screen panels in front. The perimeter fence was painted black to contrast with the Western Red Cedar screens and highlight them as a key design feature, showcasing the natural colour tones.

Both the decking and the screens will be left to naturally age to a silvery grey, complementing the grey render of the planters and the different colours in the planting scheme.

If you prefer your exterior wood to look naturally weathered then we recommend that you protect it from the damaging effects of moisture by applying Sansin Wood Sealer, which aggressively repels water while allowing wood to breathe. Over time, the wood will weather uniformly to a beautiful silver grey tone and the wood will appear completely natural as though unfinished.

The clients are delighted with their new garden and look forward to spending many happy times in it.
