Silva Timber’s Western Red Cedar battens were the material of choice for a recent project by MOOi Architecture in Cambridge. The semi-detached property was to benefit from a two-storey extension, comprising an open plan kitchen/dining area and a first-floor master bedroom suite.
Having worked with Silva Timber on several projects in the past, MOOi Architecture was keen to employ Silva’s services again; taking advantage of their expert knowledge in agreeing the best product for the job.
Having considered all the options, the customer selected Silva’s Western Red Cedar battens which are produced exclusively from premium, coastal grown Canadian Cedar. With their rich colour tones and superb dimensional stability, MOOi Architecture agreed they were the perfect fit.
Rather than opting for a traditional vertical or horizontal fitment, MOOi chose an unconventional diagonal configuration. They explained: “The thin board widths installed in an open jointed arrangement, provide a nice depth to the appearance of the elevation. The open jointed treatment also helps to give more prominence to the western red cedar, which was of particular interest with its diagonal treatment.”
