Naturally durable Siberian Larch cladding
SILVALarch™ Tongue & Groove V-Joint Profile
Sure to stand the test of time while looking great on any contemporary façade, SILVALarch™ V-Joint cladding profile is durable, stable and dense, while being incredibly easy to install without visible nails thanks to the tongue and groove joint.
The bevel, where two boards meet, creates a neat v-shaped shadow line effect along the joint, making it the perfect timber cladding choice for a contemporary look, whether installing horizontally or vertically on residential or commercial buildings.
Quality Raw Materials from Certified Forests
SILVALarch™ cladding is produced from the highest quality slow-grown Siberian Larch from the Irkutsk region of Russia, an area that experiences long cold winters and short summers. Wood from this harsh climate is much sought after for its natural growth characteristics – exceptionally slow- growing and therefore dense with tight grain. With immediate access to a plentiful supply of old-growth logs from this vast forest area, our supplier is able to provide us with Siberian Larch of an exceptional quality that far exceeds the official 'GOST 26002-83' grading standards.
It is important to note that Siberian Larch (Larix sibirica) is not to be confused with European Larch (Larix decidua, Larix europaea), which grows mainly in continental Europe and also here in the UK. Although related, Siberian Larch has different physical properties and is widely regarded to be a superior material. Notably it has a different appearance, it is more dimensionally stable, denser and more durable (due to its growing conditions) than its European cousin.
The Benefits of SilvaLarch
Warm-toned with distinctive grain patterns, the wood of Siberian Larch has a highly attractive appearance. The heartwood is golden to reddish-brown and is sharply defined from the narrow light-coloured sapwood. The annual rings are clearly marked by a difference in colour between early wood and late wood, giving the wood attractive figure and a pleasing aesthetic.
The natural durability of Siberian Larch is due to extractives present in the wood; in particular the phenolic compounds of the heartwood which have a toxic effect on certain rot-causing fungi.
Properly finished and maintained, Siberian Larch will have a service life of 50+ years. It has a decay resistance of durability class 3 (slightly durable, moderately durable) according to the EN 113 standard.
Siberian Larch has low permeability, so it can cope with varying levels of humidity without absorbing much water, and thus will not shrink or swell excessively in service. It is classified by TRADA as having ‘small’ moisture movement, though as a comparison, it is less dimensionally stable than Western Red Cedar.
The hardness of Siberian Larch, which is highly correlated with its density, makes it difficult for water and fungi to penetrate the wood. This has a positive effect on coating performance, helping to maintain a better appearance and reducing maintenance.
Kiln Dried to Optimise Dimensional Stability
SILVALarch™ boards are kiln dried to a moisture content of 16-18% (+/-2%), perfect for the immediate application of coatings and suitable for installing with minimal site acclimatisation. Read more about the importance of kiln drying.
