Description

ThermoWood®  is produced using a chemical-free natural process. By heat treating only the finest Scandinavian Redwood to enhance the chemical and physical properties of the timber, ThermoWood®  offers an exceptional cladding material with outstanding durability, stability and insulation characteristics.

This channel cladding has a textured surface known as SAWtex® which features an aesthetically pleasing and more tactile appearance than our planed smooth Thermowood. SAWtex® surfaces also have the advantage of accepting and retaining finishes significantly better than smooth planed surfaces, thus improving appearance and minimising future maintenance.

At a glance

  • Outstanding durability and excellent insulation
  • Finesawn surface - ideal for factory coating
  • Install horizontally or vertically, indoors or outdoors
  • Life expectancy of 30+ years
  • PEFC Certified

ThermoWood® Finesawn Cladding - Perfect for Factory Coating

ThermoWood® Microline Channel Profile

If you’re looking to achieve a contemporary Scandinavian exterior, with cladding that’s built to last, then our ThermoWood Finesawn Microline Channel boards are ideal. The square edged channel provides the bold shadow line that brings any façade bang up to date, while the tongue and groove joint makes it easy to install without visible nails.

Having undergone thermal modification, the Nordic Pine has more stability and durability than in its natural state. And its attractive dark brown tones bring a high-end look to almost any building, whether it’s installed vertically or horizontally.

The Story of ThermoWood

The ThermoWood treatment process is patented and the trademark is owned by the Finnish ThermoWood Association. The roots of this ancient heat and steam treatment date back thousands of years. The natural process permanently alters the wood’s physical properties, improving its stability, durability, thermal insulation and even changing the colour of the wood to a rich dark brown.

High Quality Timber Direct from the Producer

Produced from high quality Nordic Pine grown mainly in Finland, where the sub-zero winters make for straight-grained timber, ThermoWood Cladding is hard, with very few knots and low internal tension. It’s sustainably sourced from well managed forests and supplied with full PEFC chain of custody certification.

The Different Classes of ThermoWood

Thermo-S is for internal use, while Thermo-D can be used externally too. The D stands for ‘durability’ as it has a decay resistance of durability class 2 (durable) according to the EN 113 standard, making it ideal for cladding and decking.

Finishing & Protection

Under the direction of Dr. Nenad Vidovic, the Sansin Research & Development team conducted extensive testing of Sansin's core line up of products in a variety of heat-treated wood applications. Sansin's test results confirmed that without suitable coating, heat treated wood is not weather resistant and particularly susceptible to UV degradation. For the optimal performance, Silva Timber recommend protecting ThermoWood with Sansin SDF HT using our pre-finishing service.

Why factory coat?

  • Enhances the natural beauty of wood
  • Ensures a consistent finish
  • Applied in factory conditions
  • Long lasting protection against weathering
  • Simple maintenance routine
  • Reduces onsite labour costs

Sansin Enviro Stains

Easy to apply and maintain, Sansin Enviro-stains deliver outstanding performance. Sansin's range of wood protection products are available in 80 colour tones

What is weathering?

There is a risk involved when leaving wood exposed to the elements. During the weathering process wood can appear unsightly as the material can blacken due to moisture getting into the fibres and pulling out tannins and extractives. Finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation.

What to expect from timber products

When working with timber it should be expected that although ‘on-grade’, occasional boards may have minor imperfections that will require ‘working’ if you wish to eliminate. Examples include raised grain, small splits, minor handling marks, sticker marks etc – all of which can easily be remedied by trimming, gluing or sanding. In most cases imperfections can be removed with very little effort, and the small amount of off cuts generated as a result will be absorbed in the normal cutting and selection allowance.

Grading

Grades

Silva Timber’s ThermoWood is modified to Thermo-D (Durability) standards. Biological durability is an essential characteristic for end use applications in this treatment category. The average tangential swelling and shrinkage due moisture for Thermo-D class treated wood is 5-6%, Thermo-D class ThermoWood is classified as durable according to the EN113 standard – meeting Class 2 requirements.

Environment

This product is PEFC certified.

PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.

PEFC works throughout the entire forest supply chain to promote good practice in the forest and to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Thanks to its  eco-label, customers and consumers are able to identify products from sustainably managed forests.

Silva Timber meets the requirements for PEFC Chain of Custody within the BM TRADA Certification Limited Scheme for TRADA - Trak chain of custody certification.
