The main difference between shakes and shingles is that shingles typically have thinner butts than shakes, so they lie flatter for a more tailored appearance. Cedar shakes, with their thicker butts, create stronger shadow lines for a more rugged appearance.
Certi-grade® hand-split & resawn shakes have a rough split exposed face and a sawn back for a unique rustic appearance. The butt thickness is 19mm, which creates highly defined shadow lines.
'No. 1 Grade' shakes are produced by Waldun Forest Products – one of the most highly reputed manufacturers of Western Red Cedar shingles and shakes.
Please ensure when ordering that you make an allowance for wastage. We recommend adding an additional 10-15% over and above your initial requirements.
No. 1 Grade Hand-split & Resawn Shakes are 24"/610mm in length with a butt thickness of 3/4"/19mm.
For hundreds of years, Western Red Cedar shakes and shingles have been used as a roofing and cladding material. They have proven their longevity in all types of climates due to the presence of a natural oil that makes them highly resistant to decay.
Western Red Cedar shakes and shingles have a beautiful natural appearance that gives buildings a touch of individuality. With rich, warm colour tones and texture, red cedar shakes and shingles will provide a distinctive look of character that blends naturally with the environment.
Western Red Cedar shakes and shingles also provide a high degree of insulation, keeping buildings warm in winter and cool in summer. Their low carbon footprint and the fact that they are the only renewable roofing material makes cedar shakes and shingles a true eco-material.
Shingles have a reduced exposure, which results in a 3-ply roof system. Shakes, on the other hand, have a wider exposure and can be a 2-ply or 3-ply roof system.
Waldun Western Red Cedar Shakes are sold in bundles. Each bundle of No. 1 Grade Hand-split & Resawn shakes covers up to 1.86 m2 of roof area. In vertical cladding applications where the maximum exposure is increased, one bundle will cover up to 2.03 m2 for single coursing, or 3.34 m2 for double coursing (on top of an underlayer of under coursing grade shingles). Bundles are 60% 2-pack meaning that 60% of the bundle will have no more than 2 shakes per layer. This means a wider than average board size is to be expected.
Also available are taper-sawn shakes, which are sawn on both sides for a semi-textured look.
Not all cedar shake and shingle products are alike. Certi-label products, manufactured by Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau members, assure you of the highest quality standards. Member mills have committed to consistent quality through independent third-party inspections by accredited agencies. Each bundle of the product has the mill's distinctive Certi-label tucked under the bundling strap. Asking for "the blue label" or "number one blue label" is not specific enough. Cedar Bureau members' products are the only ones with the Certi brand name on the label.
If left in their natural state, cedar shakes will gradually weather to an attractive silver grey. Typically, this change will take effect after a 6 – 9-month period. A finish may be applied to maintain or enhance the natural colour or, if preferred, change the colour entirely. Cedar shakes will readily accept a penetrating stain such as Sansin SDF, which can be supplied separately for site application.
Western Red Cedar heartwood has a proven life expectancy of 60+ years due to the presence of natural oils that act as preservatives to help the wood resist decay. It has a durability rating of 'Class 2' according to BSEN350:2.
Western Red Cedar has twice the stability of the most commonly available wood species. It does not excessively shrink, swell or warp through changes in moisture or temperature. Over time it will tend to lie flat, stay straight and hold fasteners tightly.
Once nailed in position, cedar shakes have an outstanding level of rigidity. The extra strength gained from the 2 or 3 -ply overlapping method of installation makes them highly resistant to extreme weather such as wind-driven snow and rain, ice, sun, and even hurricane-force winds. Cedar shakes are 'Uplift tested' to withstand wind speeds of up to 173mph.
Western Red Cedar shakes breathe, providing an extra degree of ventilation.
Cedar shakes use a low level of energy to produce and transport, and their production emits a low level of pollution when compared to other materials.
Wood offers a high degree of thermal insulation when compared to other materials, with 413 times the thermal resistance (R-value) of steel, 2,000 times that of aluminium, and eight times that of concrete. With a value of K=0.1067 W/m°C, Western Red Cedar offers an unusually high degree of thermal insulation. This ability to slow the passage of heat and cold is due to its unique cellular structure, which slows the passage of heat and cold, thus reducing the amount of energy needed to heat and cool buildings.
The fact that cedar shakes are up to one-tenth of the weight of traditional roofing materials means that savings can be made in the supporting structure. Their low weight also makes shakes easy to transport and handle.
Western Red Cedar shakes are lightweight, easy to handle, and easy to cut and work with standard tools. They are quick and easy to install – each shake is nailed to a batten using two nails.
Western Red Cedar used to produce shakes is a renewable and sustainable resource.
When trees are harvested, new trees are planted. These growing trees emit oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, cleaning the air, and creating a healthier environment.
Western Red Cedar shakes are renewable; sustainable; their manufacture produces low emissions and no wastage; they contribute to providing energy-efficient buildings, and they are recyclable. This makes them a truly 'green' building material.
A good part of cedar shake and shingle wood fibre supply comes from salvage logging. The salvage logging process involves harvesting sections of logs that would otherwise be left on the forest floor as they are unusable for other forestry business operations. As cedar is naturally decay-resistant, this salvage fibre is in pristine condition and allows the industry to make full use of a valuable natural resource.
Made from exceptional old-growth Western Red Cedar heartwood, the quality of Waldun No. 1 Grade Handsplit & Resawn shakes exceeds the official industry grading rules.
