Waldun Premium Certi-Label Hand-Split Yellow Cedar Shakes

£81.42 (inc VAT) £67.85 (ex VAT)

Although not as well-known as Western Red Cedar, Yellow Cedar (also known as Alaskan Yellow Cedar or Western Cypress) offers very similar performance characteristics.

Yellow Cedar shakes have a thicker butt than shingles and create stronger shadow lines for a more rugged appearance. They are a uniform pale-yellow colour when new and, over time, will weather to a light silver-grey patina. Yellow Cedar is heavier and denser than Western Red Cedar and thus has excellent strength and wear resistance.

Certi-split® hand-split shakes have a rough split exposed face and a sawn back for a unique rustic appearance. The butt thickness is 19mm, which creates highly defined shadow lines.

'Premium' is the highest grade of shake available and is made from the very best defect-free, old-growth, vertical grain cedar. They are the ultimate in appearance and durability, produced by Waldun Forest Products – one of the most highly reputed manufacturers of cedar shingles and shakes.

Waldun Premium Certi-grade Hand-split Yellow Cedar Shakes

Yellow Cedar shingles and shakes provide a high degree of insulation, keeping buildings warm in winter and cool in summer. Their low carbon footprint and the fact that they are the only renewable roofing material makes cedar shingles and shakes a true eco-material.

The main difference between shingles and shakes is that shingles typically have thinner butts than shakes, so they lie flatter for a more tailored appearance. Cedar shakes, with their thicker butts, create bolder shadow lines for a more rugged appearance.

Shingles have a reduced exposure, which results in a 3-ply roof system. Shakes, on the other hand, have a larger exposure and are a 2-ply roof system.

Waldun Hand-split shakes have a rough split exposed face and a sawn back for a unique rustic appearance.

'Premium' is the highest grade of shake available and is made from the very best defect-free, old-growth, vertical grain cedar. They are the ultimate in appearance and durability, produced by Waldun Forest Products – one of the most highly reputed manufacturers of cedar shingles and shakes.

Premium Grade Handsplit Shakes are 18"/457mm in length with a butt thickness of 5/8"/16mm.

Waldun Yellow Cedar Shakes are sold in bundles. Each bundle of Premium Hand-split shakes covers up to 1.86 m2 of roof area. In vertical cladding applications where the maximum exposure is increased, one bundle will cover up to 2.03 m2 for single coursing, or 3.34 m² for double coursing (on top of an underlayer of under coursing grade shingles).

Bundles contain shakes of random widths, with the minimum being 89mm.

Certi-Sawn® Quality Assurance

Certi-Sawn® is your assurance of quality. Yellow Cedar shakes bearing the Certi-Sawn trademark are inspected by legitimate third-party agencies, accredited by the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau. The term 'Blue Label' is a registered trademark of the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau trade association, which has over 250 member companies. Be aware that just because a supplier puts a label with a blue colour on its bundles does not mean that it's 'on-grade' or third party inspected.

Beautiful Natural Appearance

If left in their natural state, cedar shakes will gradually weather to an attractive silver grey. Typically, this change will take effect after a 6 – 9-month period. A finish may be applied to maintain or enhance the natural colour or, if preferred, change the colour entirely. Cedar shakes will readily accept a penetrating stain such as Sansin SDF, which can be supplied separately for site application.

Exceptional Durability

Yellow Cedar heartwood has a proven life expectancy of 60 + years due to the presence of natural oils that act as preservatives to help the wood resist decay.

Excellent Dimensional Stability

Yellow Cedar has twice the stability of the most commonly available wood species. It does not excessively shrink, swell or warp through changes in moisture or temperature. Over time it will tend to lie flat, stay straight and hold fasteners tightly.

Ability to Withstand Extreme Weather

Once nailed in position, cedar shakes have an outstanding level of rigidity. The extra strength gained from the 2 or 3 -ply overlapping method of installation makes them highly resistant to extreme weather such as wind-driven snow and rain, ice, sun, and even hurricane-force winds. Cedar shakes are 'Uplift tested' to withstand wind speeds of up to 173mph.

Breathable

Yellow Cedar shakes breathe, providing an extra degree of ventilation.

Low Carbon Footprint

Cedar shakes use a low level of energy to produce and transport, and their production emits a low level of pollution compared to other materials.

A High Insulation Resistance Value

Wood offers a high degree of thermal insulation compared to other materials, with 413 times the thermal resistance (R-value) of steel, 2,000 times that of aluminium, and eight times that of concrete. Yellow Cedar offers a high degree of thermal insulation, reducing the amount of energy needed to heat and cool buildings.

Light in Weight

The fact that cedar shakes are up to one-tenth of the weight of traditional roofing materials means that savings can be made in the supporting structure. Their low weight also makes shakes easy to transport and handle.

Easy to Install

Yellow Cedar shakes are lightweight, easy to handle, and easy to cut and work with standard tools. They are quick and easy to install – each shake is nailed to a batten using two nails.

A Genuine 'Eco' Material

Yellow Cedar used to produce shakes is a renewable and sustainable resource.

When trees are harvested, new trees are planted. These growing trees emit oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, clean the air, and create a healthier environment.

Yellow Cedar shakes are renewable; sustainable; their manufacturing produces low emissions and no wastage; they contribute to providing energy-efficient buildings and are recyclable. This makes them a truly 'green' building material.

Salvage Logging

A good part of cedar shake and shingle wood fibre supply comes from salvage logging. The salvage logging process involves harvesting sections of logs that would otherwise be left on the forest floor as they are unusable for other forestry business operations. As cedar is naturally decay-resistant, this salvage fibre is in pristine condition and allows the industry to make full use of a valuable natural resource.

Produced From the Very Best Old-Growth Yellow Cedar

Made from exceptional old-growth Yellow Cedar heartwood, the quality of Waldun Premium Hand-split shakes exceeds the official industry grading rules.

Waldun Forest Products

Waldun Premium Hand-split shakes are made by Waldun Forest Products, a family company that dates back half a century and is today one of the largest and most respected names in the cedar shingle and shake industry.

The Waldun name is synonymous with quality. In 2012, Waldun shakes were chosen for the restoration of Philadelphia's Independence Hall - perhaps the most important historic building in the United States. It was here that both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were debated and adopted.

Silva's relationship with Waldun goes back over 15 years. Our partnership with this leading manufacturer enables us to offer our customers the most comprehensive range and extensive stockholding of cedar shakes and shingles in Europe.

A Complete Range of Shake Products

In addition to shakes, Silva also provides pre-formed shake hip and ridge units, battens, Tyvek® breathable membrane, stainless steel nails, and a wide range of finishes and cleaning products. All you need to complete the job.

Usage Guide (Nails)

1 kilo of 2.65 x 50mm Stainless Steel Flat Head Annular Ringshank Nails will be required to fix 4 bundles of premium hand-split shakes.

Recommended Use

A premium option for a wide range of uses, particularly main building roofs and walls where a rustic character is desired.

Joints in any one course should be separated not less than 38mm from joints in adjacent courses and in any three courses, no two joints should be in direct alignment.
