Three lengths of Waldun Premium No.1 Blue Label Western Red Cedar Shingles are available. They are known as 'Fivex' (16"/406mm), 'Perfections' (18"/457mm), and 'Royals' (24"/610mm).
The butt thickness of Fivex shingles is just over 10mm. Perfections and Royals have slightly thicker butts, at 11.5mm and 12.7mm, respectively.
Western Red Cedar shakes and shingles have a beautiful natural appearance that gives buildings a touch of individuality. With rich, warm colour tones and texture, red cedar shakes and shingles will provide a distinctive look of character that blends naturally with the environment.
Western Red Cedar shingles and shakes also provide a high degree of insulation, keeping buildings warm in winter and cool in summer. Their low carbon footprint and the fact that they are the only renewable roofing material makes cedar shingles and shakes a true eco-material.
The main difference between shingles and shakes is that shingles typically have thinner butts than shakes, so they lie flatter for a more tailored appearance. Cedar shakes, with their thicker butts, create stronger shadow lines for a more rugged appearance.
Shingles have a reduced exposure, which results in a 3-ply roof system. Shakes, on the other hand, have a larger exposure and are a 2-ply roof system.
For larger areas, we recommend using Perfections or Royals. These longer shingles are better suited to larger-scale roofs or facades. They work better aesthetically and are quicker to install as they require fewer courses, due to them having a greater maximum exposure area than Fivex.
Waldun Premium Western Red Cedar Shingles are sold in bundles. Each bundle of Fivex shingles covers up to 2.32 m2 of roof area. In vertical cladding applications where the maximum exposure is increased, one bundle will cover up to 3.25 m2 for single coursing, or 5.58 m2 for double coursing (on top of an underlayer of under coursing grade shingles). Bundles contain shingles of random widths, with the minimum being 76mm.

Certigrade™ is your assurance of quality. Western Red Cedar Shingles bearing the Certigrade trademark are inspected by legitimate, third party agencies, accredited by the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau. The term 'Blue Label' is a registered trademark of the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau trade association, which has over 250 member companies. Be aware that just because a supplier puts a label with a blue colour on its bundles does not mean that it's 'on-grade' or third party inspected.
If left in their natural state, cedar shingles will gradually weather to an attractive silver grey. Typically, this change will take effect after a 6 – 9-month period. A finish may be applied to maintain or enhance the natural colour or, if preferred, change the colour entirely. Cedar shingles will readily accept a penetrating stain such as Sansin SDF, which can be supplied separately for site application.
Western Red Cedar heartwood has a proven life expectancy of 60 + years due to the presence of natural oils that act as preservatives to help the wood resist decay. It has a durability rating of 'Class 2' according to BSEN350:2.
Western Red Cedar has twice the stability of the most commonly available wood species. It does not excessively shrink, swell or warp through changes in moisture or temperature. Over time it will tend to lie flat, stay straight and hold fasteners tightly.
Once nailed in position, cedar shingles have an outstanding level of rigidity. The extra strength gained from the 3-ply overlapping method of installation makes them highly resistant to extreme weather such as wind-driven snow and rain, ice, sun, and even hurricane-force winds. Cedar shingles are 'Uplift tested' to withstand wind speeds of up to 173mph.
Western Red Cedar shingles breathe, providing an extra degree of ventilation.
Cedar shingles use a low level of energy to produce and transport, and their production emits a low level of pollution when compared to other materials.
Wood offers a high degree of thermal insulation when compared to other materials, with 413 times the thermal resistance (R-value) of steel, 2,000 times that of aluminium, and eight times that of concrete. With a value of K=0.1067 W/m°C, Western Red Cedar offers an unusually high degree of thermal insulation. This ability to slow the passage of heat and cold is due to its unique cellular structure, which slows the passage of heat and cold, thus reducing the amount of energy needed to heat and cool buildings.
The fact that cedar shingles are up to one-tenth of the weight of traditional roofing materials means that savings can be made in the supporting structure. Their low weight also makes shingles easy to transport and handle.
Western Red Cedar shingles are lightweight, easy to handle, and easy to cut and work with standard tools. They are quick and easy to install – each shingle is nailed to a batten using two nails.
Western Red Cedar used to produce shingles is a renewable and sustainable resource.
When trees are harvested, new trees are planted. These growing trees emit oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, cleaning the air, and creating a healthier environment.
Western Red Cedar shingles are renewable; sustainable; their manufacture produces low emissions and no wastage; they contribute to providing energy-efficient buildings, and they are recyclable. This makes them a truly 'green' building material.
A good part of cedar shake and shingle wood fibre supply comes from salvage logging. The salvage logging process involves harvesting sections of logs that would otherwise be left on the forest floor as they are unusable for other forestry business operations. As cedar is naturally decay-resistant, this salvage fibre is in pristine condition and allows the industry to make full use of a valuable natural resource.
Made from exceptional old-growth Western Red Cedar heartwood, the quality of Waldun Premium shingles exceeds the official industry grading rules. Superior wood fibre, combined with the fact that a bundle of Waldun Premiums typically contains a higher proportion of wider shingles than standard No. 1 Grade Blue Label (enabling faster installation), makes them well worth the minimal extra investment.
Waldun Premiums are made by Waldun Forest Products, a family company that dates back half a century and is today one of the largest and most respected names in the cedar shingle and shake industry.
The Waldun name is synonymous with quality. In 2012, Waldun shakes were chosen for the restoration of Philadelphia's Independence Hall - perhaps the most important historic building in the United States. It was here that both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were debated and adopted.
