With inside-outside living becoming increasingly popular, gardens need to be multifunctional spaces that can meet everyone’s wishes. For Steve Tottie the inside-outside dream was to have an outdoor kitchen to take full advantage of the British Summer.
Steve initially imagined having a fully fitted outdoor kitchen but altered his plans in favour of a more adaptable space where he could also entertain friends and family.
The existing BBQ shelter didn’t allow the flexibility Steve was looking for, so he drafted in some friends to help construct a new covered area with a hidden storage space built in.
Wanting a contemporary look Steve chose to use the Select No 2 grade of Western Red Cedar for a more clear finish with almost no knots. To create a smooth finish tongue and groove cladding was used to clad the new kitchen area and hidden storage.
As Steve wanted to avoid any joins in the cladding he chose to use whole lengths and have a slightly higher cutting allowance than the recommended 10%. Only using whole lengths does create a higher number of offcuts, but these were used to clad an existing shed and replace a section of fencing to make use of every board and give the whole area a modern makeover.
The cladding was finished in Osmo clear UV oil to preserve the natural colour variances of Western Red Cedar that Steve had fallen in love with, whilst still providing the timber with all important moisture protection.
The rich tones of the Western Red Cedar contrast perfectly with the Indian stone used to pave the new kitchen area, creating a stylish and contemporary place to entertain.
"The cladding looks fantastic and everyone has commented on the quality, we’re really please with how it’s come together."
