Description

These Western Red Cedar boards are produced and graded specifically for fencing. They are usually installed vertically by nailing to cross rails between posts, though there are numerous fence styles that can be built using these boards, including horizontal slatted screens.

We have a limited number of 1.83m lengths which we are selling at a reduced price.

This specific product is not a permanent stock item. It will come and go as and when it becomes available. When it hits the Specials List this material moves quickly, so if we have what you need we suggest you snap it up before it goes.

Please note that to keep the prices low on Specials List items we don’t sort boards in any way before they go out. They are just sold as we receive them, so bear in mind that there may be the odd defect to trim out.

Western Red Cedar Fence Boards

Raw Material and Production

These No 2 & Better No Hole Western Red Cedar fence boards are produced from second growth British Columbia coastal grown Western Red Cedar.

Boards are produced for Silva by Terminal Forest Products, a Canadian primary sawmill and manufacturer with an unparalleled international reputation for superior Western Red Cedar products.

This product is available exclusively in the UK through Silva. It is sustainably sourced from well managed forests and supplied with full PEFC chain of custody certification.

Width / Lengths

Western Red Cedar fence boards are currently available in the following size and lengths:

Thickness: 19mm

Width: 89mm

Length: 1.83m

Kiln Dried

Boards are kiln dried to a moisture content of 16-18% (+/-2%), the optimal moisture content for external timber in the UK. Among its many benefits over air drying, the kiln drying process enables the boards to dry uniformly to achieve optimum dimensional stability. It also enables immediate application of coatings and minimises site acclimatisation. For more information on the benefits of kiln drying click here.

Surface Texture and Profile

Boards have a SAWtex® textured surface on the face and a planed reverse.

The SAWtex® face is recommended as it will accept and retain finish significantly better than the planed face, thus improving appearance and minimising future maintenance.

Finishing & Protection

It is recommended that a finish is applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. The type of coating will be determined by the final finish and appearance desired.

Why Pre-finish?

  • Enhances the natural beauty of wood
  • Ensures a consistent finish
  • Applied in factory conditions
  • Long lasting protection against weathering
  • Simple maintenance routine
  • Reduces onsite labour costs

Sansin Enviro Stains

Easy to apply and maintain, Sansin Enviro-stains deliver outstanding performance. Sansin's range of wood protection products are available in 80 colour tones

What is weathering?

There is a risk involved when leaving wood exposed to the elements. During the weathering process wood can appear unsightly as the material can blacken due to moisture getting into the fibres and pulling out tannins and extractives. Finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation.

Environment

Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.

For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.
