Create an effortlessly modern look with this Western Red Cedar V-Joint Cladding

The finest tight grained Canadian Western Red Cedar

Cedar cladding produced from one of highest grades commercially available - No. 2 Clear & Better - and a high percentage of the boards are vertical grain, making it even more desirable. The wood fibre is British Columbia old-growth Western Red Cedar and it comprises almost entirely of heartwood. It is produced by Terminal Forest Products, a Canadian manufacturer whose quality standards surpass anyone else in the cedar industry.

Kiln Dried for Optimum Dimensional Stability

Cladding boards that have been kiln dried have many advantages over those that have been air dried. With controlled drying at source, not only are they more stable, but you can immediately apply coatings and cladding can be installed with minimal site acclimatisation. Silva Select Western Red Cedar is kiln dried to a moisture content of 16-18% (+/-2%) – the optimal moisture content for timber cladding in the UK . Read more about the importance of kiln drying.

Surface Textures

This V-joint cladding has a planed face and a SAWtex® textured face. The latter is recommended for exposure.

The SAWtex® face will accept and retain finish significantly better than the planed face, thus improving appearance and minimising future maintenance.

Visible wood grain creates a beautiful warm look

The fine saw textured face gives this cladding a beautiful natural appearance that makes the wood grain more visible and exudes a feeling of warmth, adding an extra layer to its appeal.

The textured surface also accepts and retains finishes better than a smooth surface. The open grain allows finish to penetrate deeply and consistently into the wood, so not only will it look better – with a richer and more even colour - it will last longer in between maintenance coats too (studies by wood scientists have shown up to 3 times longer).

Create Contemporary Indoor Spaces

From feature walls to room dividers, or even a stunning ceiling, Western Red Cedar V-Joint is hugely versatile for creating contemporary internal panelling in your home. With rich natural colour tones, it’s warm and inviting, making a great contrast to stainless steel appliances and modern fittings. No wonder its popular with architects and interior designers.

A Complete Range of Cladding Materials

In addition to the cladding boards, Silva also provides battens, Tyvek® breathable membrane, stainless steel nails, door / window trim, soffits, fascia, barge boards, corner sections and a wide range of coatings and cleaning products – everything you need to complete the job.

Finishing & Protection

It is recommended that a finish is applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. The type of coating will be determined by the final finish and appearance desired.

Why Factory Coat?

  • Enhances the natural beauty of wood
  • Ensures a consistent finish
  • Applied in factory conditions
  • Long lasting protection against weathering
  • Simple maintenance routine
  • Reduces onsite labour costs

Sansin Enviro Stains

Easy to apply and maintain, Sansin Enviro-stains deliver outstanding performance. Sansin's range of wood protection products are available in 80 colour tones

What is weathering?

There is a risk involved when leaving wood exposed to the elements. During the weathering process wood can appear unsightly as the material can blacken due to moisture getting into the fibres and pulling out tannins and extractives. Finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation.

What to expect from timber products

When working with timber it should be expected that although ‘on-grade’, occasional boards may have minor imperfections that will require ‘working’ if you wish to eliminate. Examples include raised grain, small splits, minor handling marks, sticker marks etc – all of which can easily be remedied by trimming, gluing or sanding. In most cases imperfections can be removed with very little effort, and the small amount of off cuts generated as a result will be absorbed in the normal cutting and selection allowance.

Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.

For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.
