Western Red Cedar Rainscreen profiled boards can be used in the creation of horizontal slatted screens. They are typically utilised in contemporary garden design and commercial applications to achieve an attractive high end appearance. The horizontal lines will accentuate the length of the space, and the interlocking boards provide privacy.

Silva offers this product in two widths and two ‘clear’ grades of Western Red Cedar – ‘clear’ being the term to describe timber that is largely free of knots and other characteristics. No. 2 Clear & Better is the higher of the two grades and therefore has fewer imperfections. Rainscreen boards produced from Silva’s Select No. 4 Clear & Better contain slightly more knots and other characteristics, but overall will offer a similar ‘clear’ appearance at a more economical price.

    Grading Rules Explained

Slatted screens with more privacy and natural light penetration

Western Red Cedar Rainscreen profiled boards are usually installed horizontally to accentuate the length of the structure. When used in garden design this creates the illusion that the space is longer or wider than it is in reality.

Known as ‘Rainscreen’, this profile is the shape of a parallelogram with its two sides at opposing angles. It is installed with a narrow gap between adjacent boards to allow a small amount of light and air to filter through. A Rainscreen fence is perfect for situations where the open airy feel of a slatted screen (rather than a solid board fence) is required, but also where a level of privacy is needed - you cannot see through a Rainscreen fence when looking directly at it. Also, an open slatted fence offers more protection against the wind than a solid fence as it is dispersed rather than forced up and over.

Use Western Red Cedar slatted screening from Silva to transform an outdoor space

  • Create surfaces with ever changing patterns of light and shadow
  • Provides a wonderful backdrop for plants and foliage
  • Truly versatile – slats / boards available in a variety of widths and lengths
  • Simple installation methods enable the quick and easy transformation of the outdoor space
  • Provide privacy without totally blocking out light and air flow
  • Open boarded design offers more effective protection against wind than solid fence
  • Provides shade without sacrificing all natural light
  • Use to define boundaries within a garden – separate relaxation areas, pool areas, refuse / recycling areas etc.

The fact that clear grade Western Red Cedar is used to produce these boards will lend the project a clean contemporary feel and a level of quality that cannot be achieved with other materials. Furthermore, the reason Western Red Cedar is more suited to this application than any other wood species is the fact that it possesses outstanding dimensional stability. This means that movement in service is kept to an absolute minimum, so the structure will maintain the crisp straight lines necessary to maintain the clean contemporary appearance of a Rainscreen fence.

The raw material used to produce Silva’s rainscreen boards is fine grained coastal grown Western Red Cedar that has been kiln dried at source to a moisture content of 12 -15%. This is important for a number of reasons (see document for further information) but the main advantages are that it doesn’t need acclimatisation on site prior to installation and it can be finished immediately so it is protected from the outset. Green or inconsistently air dried wood will shrink after installation causing gaps to widen and may initially be too wet to accept a finish.

For high quality contemporary slatted screens Silva’s clear Western Red Cedar makes perfect sense:

  • Highly durable and long lasting
  • Exceptional dimensional stability means boards remain flat and straight
  • Clear grade Western Red Cedar offers unrivalled beauty
  • Being light in weight, cedar is easy to handle on site, cut and work with, reducing build time
  • Attractive fine grain and warm colour tones
  • A proven performer in all types of climate – a natural product you can rely upon

Finishing & Protection

It is recommended that a finish is applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. The type of coating will be determined by the final finish and appearance desired.

Why Pre-finish?

  • Enhances the natural beauty of wood
  • Ensures a consistent finish
  • Applied in factory conditions
  • Long lasting protection against weathering
  • Simple maintenance routine
  • Reduces onsite labour costs

Sansin Enviro Stains

Easy to apply and maintain, Sansin Enviro-stains deliver outstanding performance. Sansin's range of wood protection products are available in 80 colour tones

What is weathering?

There is a risk involved when leaving wood exposed to the elements. During the weathering process wood can appear unsightly as the material can blacken due to moisture getting into the fibres and pulling out tannins and extractives. Finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation.

What to expect from timber products

When working with timber it should be expected that although ‘on-grade’, occasional boards may have minor imperfections that will require ‘working’ if you wish to eliminate. Examples include raised grain, small splits, minor handling marks, sticker marks etc – all of which can easily be remedied by trimming, gluing or sanding. In most cases imperfections can be removed with very little effort, and the small amount of off cuts generated as a result will be absorbed in the normal cutting and selection allowance.

Western Red Cedar No. 2 Clear and Better

This particular product is produced from a sawn Western Red Cedar clear grade known as ‘No. 2 Clear and Better’. It is one of two grades - the other being ‘No. 4 Clear’- of sawn clear Western Red Cedar which are classified in accordance with the R-List Export Grading Rule Book published by the Pacific Lumber Export Bureau.

Silva Select No. 2 Clear & Better far exceeds the grading rules set out in the Export R-List Grading & Dressing Rules book. Usually with this grade you should expect some trimming and wastage; however with this product you will find very little. We have repeatedly been told by industrial users that this product is the best they have seen on the UK market.

Western Red Cedar No.4 Clear

The first thing to highlight about our ‘Silva Select No. 4 Clear’ product is that it far exceeds the grading rules set out for ‘No. 4 Clear’. Usually with this grade you should expect a certain amount of trimming and wastage; however the producer of the sawn lumber has identified a demand for a product that is less expensive than ‘No. 2 Clear & Better’ but yields less wastage than standard ‘No. 4 Clear’.

In our opinion this has been achieved with Silva Select No. 4 Clear. We call it Silva Select because it’s a cut above the standard grade and we are the only company importing this product into the UK. A number of our customers have expressed surprise at the quality, especially after reading the grade description which makes it sound far worse quality than it actually is.

Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada. Less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year.

For each tree harvested, three are replanted to ensure the forests will exist in perpetuity. Western Red Cedar has a low impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. It requires significantly less energy to produce than man-made alternatives and is bio-degradable.
