The term ‘Mill-Run’ is used to describe a proprietary grade where the quality of the production is essentially not graded, and the resulting quality of the material is as it develops from the log.
‘Mill-Run’ is accumulated at the sawmill when cutting certain sizes. If the mill does not want to separate the developing grades, the material gets stacked and sold as ‘Mill-Run’ under the industry terms ‘mill-run clear’, ‘mill-run common through clear’ and ‘mill-run common through shop.’
‘Mill-run clear’ will produce the longest pieces of clear wood fibre, interrupted by occasional knots that may – depending on the requirement of the buyer – need to be trimmed out.
Most buyers will chop ‘mill-run common through clear’ and typically recover clear pieces 600mm and longer.
‘Mill run common through shop’ develops in a similar manner with the exception that the ‘No. 4 clear and better’ has been graded out. There is still a good percentage of short clear recovery when chopped.
