Enhance your deck project with the our Western Red Cedar railing system. Four basic components - posts, top/lower rails, cap rails, and balusters - can be used to create a variety of superb railing styles.
Silva's recommended method of construction (illustrated in photographs on this page) is to fit the top / lower rails in between the posts. The cap rail runs across the top of the posts, and the balusters attach vertically to the top/ lower rails. The top of the baluster butts up to the underside of the cap rail and bottom of the balusters can be cut at 45° to give a more finished look. This simple design will produce a stylish and structurally stable deck railing.

Durability: When properly finished and maintained, Western Red Cedar will deliver decades of trouble-free service. It has a decay resistance of durability class 2 (durable) according to the EN 113 standard.
Stability: Western Red Cedar has excellent dimensional stability because of its low wood density and shrinkage factor. Shrinkage and swelling are minimal, displaying only small movements with changes in humidity.
Density: The wood of Western Red Cedar is light, weighing 330 to 340 kg/m3 when kiln-dried (12-15% moisture content).
Kiln-dried: Western Red Cedar rails and balusters are kiln-dried, giving them many advantages. The process improves dimensional stability, permits the immediate application of a coating, and enables installation with minimal site acclimatisation.
Grading: Top/Lower Rail and Cap Rail is produced exclusively from 'Architect Knotty' grade Western Red Cedar. Posts are made from Appearance grade Western Red Cedar. These grades look very similar and are both characterised by well-interspersed sound tight (live) knots. Read more about Architect knotty and Appearance grading and quality here.
Sourcing/certification: Western Red Cedar is sourced from the most sustainably managed forests in the world in British Columbia, Canada, and comes with full PEFC certification.
Optional Extras
Coatings: The application of a coating is necessary to protect the wood and optimise its appearance over time. The coating should be applied to all surfaces, including ends, before installation. Choose from our wide range of high-performance wood coating systems.
